Vale Basil Cocks

Basil Cocks

It is with immense sadness that the Go Kart Club of Victoria accounces the passing of Basil Cocks who for 15 years was the club's maintenance and general groundsman.

Basil passed away in the Diamond Creek Aged Care Centre, just weeks after celebrating his 100th birthday.

Right up to retiring from the club at aged 93, Basil was strong in mind and heart. Very resilient and confident he was extremely independant and lived at home alone, until just months ago.

He never complained about pain or illness, which was the mark of a strong-willed man. Others might have described as stubborn and obstinate. Nevertheless, Basil lived his life his way.

He had a sense of moral conviction and honesty and didn't suffer fools gladly. And yet, underneath this veneer, Basil had a soft spot and cared for many around him.

One typical example that springs to mind, was in his days maintaining the grass at the club. Every race meeting, he would mow a special pathway for the girls running grid sheets from the control tower to the outgrid, so that the girls didn't get their feet wet in the long grass!

Basil had a great sense of humour and loved to dress up for a dinner or outings and always turned on the charm for the ladies.

His hobbies, achievements and accomplishments were many including rebuilding old cars, motorbikes and anything involving motor racing.

Other achievements in later life included taking on his new puppy at age 88, buying his red Ferrari (mobility scooter) at age 95, with his biggest achievement to his mind - that of living to 100 years.

Basil will be remembered for his contribution to the club for years to come.
